Dr. Alice Aureli

Dr.Alice Aureli is an expert in water resources with a PhD in hydrogeology. Until June 2023, she was the head of the Groundwater Systems and Water Cooperation Section at UNESCO. With more than 30 years of experience, Dr. Aureli has worked extensively in water resources management and governance. Most recently, she was responsible for the monitoring of the water cooperation indicator of the Agenda 2030 SDG 6 . She headed the international team responsible for conducting the global assessment of the planet’s transboundary aquifers in the early 2000s.

She presided the UNESCO’s ISARM programme and, from 2002 to 2012, supervised the UNESCO IHP expert team assisting the UN International Law Commission in drafting the Articles of the Law on Transboundary Aquifers.She has played a crucial role in translating scientific knowledge into policy initiatives, as well as formulating comprehensive concepts and guidelines for effective groundwater governance.

In addition to her extensive career in research and policy, Dr. Aureli continues to supervise both Masters and PhD students. Her expertise and dedication have earned her numerous international awards. She is also a prolific author, having contributed to a wide range of publications and serving as editor for several esteemed international journals.
